Soap Nuts are one of the Earth's truly sustainable natural soaps. Actually, a fruit containing saponins, a natural soap, that is harvested from trees in India and Nepal.

Sustainable and Biodegradable

Not only sustainable, but biodegradable, chemical-free, gentle, natural detergent—for your laundry detergent choice look no further than the humble Soap Nut. They can be purchased on-line from buysoapnuts.com and other websites.

How to Use

They are very easy to use in your washing machine. Pop 3-4 soap nuts into one of the small cotton bags, also available at buysoapnuts.com . Tie and toss into the washer; add clothes and water. Each of these bags of soap nuts can be reused for 4-5 loads, then can be disposed of in your compost pile. A second option, according to Erin Johnson, who co-owns buysoapnuts.com with her husband, an online business that they run from their Melfort, Saskatchewan home in Canada, is to make liquid soap nuts laundry detergent outlined on her site.

You can also choose to add a 1/2 cup of borax or baking soda to the wash cycle to boost cleansing power or white vinegar to the rinse cycle, if you want greater germ-killing power. The soap nuts do not need to be used with any fabric softener, as they are naturally softening. Soap nuts are also exceptionally gentle, even on the most delicate of fabrics. And they are non-irritating, a wonderful perk for those with sensitive skin.

Do Soap Nuts Have a Fragrance?

The clean, fresh scent of Nature is the only "fragrance" that soap nuts have, which is often a plus for those with allergies. If you want to add fragrance, look for an all-natural, essential oil; a few drops into the wash or onto a clean rag tossed in your dryer will do the trick.

Soap Nuts and Dirty Jobs

When asked if soap nuts work with heavily-soiled items like dirty cloth diapers or a teenager's athletic socks, Erin, an experienced, young mom of one toddler in diapers, states that soap nuts work great to remove bad and musty smells. To disinfect and whiten though, you will need to add your choice of ½ cup of borax or hydrogen peroxide. She was amazed after starting to launder her daughter's dirty diapers with soap nuts at the natural clean smell (i.e. the lingering urine smell was gone). Another bonus was that the natural saponins in soap nuts worked to strip the old detergent residue from the cloth diapers, making them more absorbent again.

Soap Nuts and Your Conscience

Although some consumers are concerned with the energy costs of shipping products from the far corners of the world, harvesting and exporting Soap Nuts creates jobs for villagers in India and Nepal. These local co-ops provide sustainable, economic prosperity for local people. Often, the alternative is trees are cut down for a one-time use as fire wood. The Nepalese supplier for buysoapnuts.com has recently applied for a Fair Trade certification, a certification whereby local business co-ops in impoverished areas link with importers in developed countries to market their products at a fair price to enable their communities to prosper.

Soap Nuts might look a little funny, but let's not judge the "package from the outside" – they pack a powerful, all-natural option to the chemical, manufactured detergents polluting our bodies and water. Try some; you might just keep on "buying soap nuts"!

Soap nuts are great natural product. Using soap nuts is an easy way to avoid unneccessary chemicals in our lives. In the US you can buy Soap Nuts at http://goodearthlaundry.weebly.com . Here you can also support feline friends, an animal welfare group.

A low cost, green eco friendly, healthy natural way to clean is to make a homemade liquid from soap nuts which grow on the Chinaberry tree and have been used for thousands of years. They work very effectively.

I was looking for something natural for my cloth diapers and laundry. I originally was introduced to Soap Nuts at Tidbit (www.tidbit-couture.com) and was very hesitant to try those funny looking little fruits - months later I am so glad I did. I will never go back to detergents again! Soap Nuts left no lingering smells on my cloth diapers and my diapers absorbency returned. My families laundry comes out clean and fresh and undeniably soft. So the best advice I can give is to give them a try - hopefully you too will be amazed!

Soap Nuts as a Natural Laundry Detergent to Wash Your Clothes. http://www.berryclean.com

Imagine buying something that has no harsh chemicals in it. Something that was made in a 100% natural way and gives you no anxiety or fear of disease. Along with all this something that comes from the bounty of the nature and helps us restore and preserve. When you buy soap nuts you are giving back to the environment by not polluting it via synthetic detergents. So go green, go natural and go the soap nuts way.

Natural detergent that has given new meaning to washing your clothes safely is the “Soap nut”. Soap nuts are a revolutionary and interesting natural detergent and the best part is they grow literally on trees. A soap nut tree to be precise. In the Asian countries of India and Indonesia they have been used for centuries with great results. They are good for both your clothes and you and are a gift of nature. They grow on a tree called sapindus mukorrosi or the Chinese Soapberry Tree. Their outer shell is dried and can be used as soap by combining 2-3 of these nuts in a small bag.

No matter how much care you take in washing your clothes and personal items, you will often see your garments fade in color and fall apart much before you expect them to. They are still young and new but something is taking away life from them. You go to the store you bought them from and complain of bad quality, you curse your washing machine but the real culprit is hidden safely in your house. The harmful synthetic detergents and fabric softeners are the actual cause behind the loss of shine from your clothes.

So go green, go natural and go the soap nuts way. http://www.berryclean.com

I just found out about a shampoo company that actually uses soapnuts in it as well as decyl polyglucose. It's a great lather and perfect for people who need a mild shampoo. I have eczema and for the first time I could step out and not scratch. If you want to check it out...www.ebelegy.bigcartel.com

tina knudsen: love it
I bought 5lbs of them from Naturoli after trying them in a small batch and getting a few free samples to give out to friends...I thought I would need so many since I was soo excited to use them, and ready to make so many different scents with all of my newly purchased oils...They are AMAZING!!!!!!!!! Istill have at least 3.5-4 lbs. left! I use them for dishes, laundry, everything in between, but am going to try them as a shampoo next! I have a family of 5, use cloth diapers, am a stay at home mom and have been sitting on these soapnuts since spring!!! I am thrilled and wish i could convince evryone to use them. They do require a little work(simmering, adding oils, checking laundry twice for the muslin bag...ordering once a year)but buying chemicals with my hard earned money to put on/in my babys' bodies and the earth..Naturoli! P.S. the owner/manager who helped me with my purchase was incredible!! There was an issue where I misunderstood the shipping and she made every accomodation to ensure I still ordered my soapnuts(took off the shipping)! I felt so awful, that I let her know I could not do that, since it was my mistake! She was so gracious to say thank you for my honesty and still cut me a slight break. p.s.s.Please do not take advantage, here.
As soon as I have to order more,I will definately stick with Naturoli, for life so long as the organic nature of the nut and the organic nature of the customer service never wavers! Thank you

i done my research on soap nut, i found it require more water to remove that soap for your hand or body, and if a traces of it remain, then it cause heavy eye burn if come in contact with the eyes, you can't use it if you have any cuts, or open wound, as shampoo, we in old days when dont have any choice of soap, use to use it as shampoo, but as soon as we got this new non irritating soap we stoped using this of self cleaning.. one more thing, if this soap gone in nature untreted, it will kill aquatic fauna... so be cautious, i recomed it as a toxicant for insect and fishes......zoology@rediffmail.com

I think the article was informative and helpful. I appreciate the part about creating coop's for local villagers. I just watched the Dragon's Den show and Arlene was complaining about the smell, so the part where you can add essential oils (natural) to improve the smell is great. Having a family with sensitive skin and eczema this may be the product for us. I will certainly be purchasing some to try.
